The budget items the opposition took exception to which sort of spurred all of this were changed and fluffed up to conform to their sensitivities. That just makes it feel a little bit dirty. That being said, I mostly agree with where you're at and will support our new boot-strapped & McGyvered government if that's what ends up happening as the result of Monday's vote. I also can't help but think that if we do end up with it then maybe, just maybe, voter turnout next time around might be at least a wee bit better. It's why I take a hunter gatherer approach to meal planning rather than doing a weekly 'big shop' at a box store and why I donate my second hand clothing to and shop from the consignment store down the street rather than taking them to the VV boutique. One thing which has been on my mind in a big way lately is the idea that in spending my money with the little guys I'm forging a relationship which goes beyond the point of purchase. When I walk into Minh's on Tuesdays I get smiles and waves and invited to a sampling of the fresh egg rolls and wontons only the owners' inner circle gets first dibs on. When I need to buy 5 pair of pants from the consignment because a sprog went through a sudden growth spurt or ripped them all I'm going to get one pair free. Beyond the obvious direct benefit to me, though, is the idea that I'm somehow circumventing the customer-is-always-right-but-nothing-is-negotiable consumer culture which keeps everyone at arm's length from everyone else.
