I have been working on Kristeena’s Christmas present for a few days now, and it’s coming along great. I decided that using different textures was the way to go with this scarf, it was in essence an experiment to see if I could actually pair worsted weight or dk yarn with bulky, novelty yarn. It’s working out fine.
The yarns I am using for the scarf are Red Heart Super Saver in dark orchid and pale green, Patton’s Bohemian (I have incorrectly labeled this yarn as being made by Bernat in the past,) and Bernat Frenzy which is discontinued.
The pattern is fairly easy, it consists of a mixture of stockinette stitch and garter stitch to make a rib resembling a ladder.
I used 4mm needles, but the size is not important as long as the tension is even. The pattern is as follows:
Colour a (CA) 40-60g (unsure of yardage) – Dark Orchid
Colour B (CB) approx. 100g – Pale Green
Novelty A (NA) 50g – Pattons Bohemian “Hypnotic Haze”
Novelty B (NB) 50g – Bernat Frenzy Purple
(The amounts are approximate, you may need more or less depending on the length of the scarf.)
- Cast on 20 in CA
- Row 1 (and every odd row) knit
- Row 2,4,6,8 -p 2 k 2 across
- pick up NA, row 9-12 k in garter st.
- Row 14,16,18,20 – Pick up CA on row 14 and k1 *p2, k2, rep from * to last st k1
- pick up NB, row 21-24, k in garter st
- pick up CB, row 26,28,30,32, k2, p2 across
- pick up NA, row 33-36, garter st
- pick up CB, row 38,40,42,44, p1 *k2, p2, rep from * to last st, p1
- Repeat from row 1 to end of scarf, working 8 rows in worsted or dk yarn, then 4 rows in novelty yarn.
The colour pattern I am using starts with 2 8-row sections of colour A, followed by a repeat of 4 8-row sections of CB, then 1 8-row section of CA, and will end the scarf with 2 8-row sections of CA. I am alternating the novelty yarn. I was tempted to use up all of my novelty yarn in this scarf because it will go a long wqay, but given the staggered rib, colour changes, and the existing novelty yarns, the end result may have been just a little too much.
